Philips Hue firmware upgrade

Statement

In the age of the Internet of Things, there is a need to continually enhance the security and functionality of all connected systems. In order to continue providing our consumers with the best connected lighting experience at home, we are rolling out a firmware upgrade for Philips Hue worldwide, starting 18 April 2016.

This firmware upgrade will deliver two key updates:

1. Security update: the firmware upgrade will enhance the security of your Philips Hue system for third party apps.

The upgrade improves security by giving third party apps a unique key via the Philips Hue bridge when first connecting to the Philips Hue system. We have been working on this security update with all known developers since September 2015. As a result, the vast majority of popular third party apps for Philips Hue have been updated by developers, to comply with our new security measures.

Third-party apps that have not been updated and downloaded before the firmware upgrade will continue to work with Philips Hue. However, they will not work if the bridge is factory reset or if Android users clean the data storage on their smart device. For updates on popular third-party apps for Philips Hue on iOS and Android please click on the below buttons to see more information on the popular Philips Hue third-party apps.

2. Functionality update: As we prepare to launch the much-anticipated new Philips Hue app this spring, the firmware upgrade will also make changes to our existing Philips Hue app starting April 20, 2016. A noticeable feature in this update will be a new app icon (grey) and app name (Philips Hue generation 1). This will allow us to offer you the choice of two Philips Hue apps in the App Store and Google Play Store: the original Philips Hue generation 1 app and the new Philips Hue app when it launches this Spring.

We are committed to Philips Hue being interoperable with apps, devices and platforms. We will continue to work with other brands and developers to bring consumers the best home connected lighting experience. Why are you updating the security for third-party Philips Hue apps?
