Troubleshooting a Hue dimmer switch

The Hue dimmer switch is the magnetic remote control for your Hue Lights.

Your Hue dimmer switch was already connected to your Hue bridge but has stopped working recently.

  • Make sure your Hue bridge is fully operational by checking the 4 lights on top of the Hue bridge, they should all 4 be lit up.
  • Make sure that the Hue dimmer switch is fully operational by pressing a button (the light on the front should light up green).
  • Make sure that the Hue dimmer switch is within range of the Hue bridge. Not further away than the farthest Hue light that is connected to your Hue bridge (The lights re-transmit the signal towards the Hue bridge).
  • Make sure the Hue dimmer switch is not mounted to a metal surface, this can negatively influence the range of the Hue dimmer switch.
  • Make sure that the Hue lights that you are controlling are controllable from the Philips Hue app (otherwise the issue might be related to the Hue light not the Hue dimmer switch).
  • Make sure that the Hue dimmer switch is properly configured in the Philips Hue app. Go to settings, Tap on “Accessory Setup” and tap on the Hue dimmer switch that is having issues. Make sure the configuration is correct and tap on “Save”.
  • Restart the Hue dimmer switch by holding all 4 buttons of the Hue dimmer switch up to # seconds. You can let go when the light on the front flashes red/green briefly.
  • Completely reset and re-connect the Hue dimmer switch by pressing and holding the “setup” button on the back for 10 seconds.

You use the Hue dimmer switch to directly control lights (without a Hue bridge) but has stopped working recently.

  • Make sure that the Hue dimmer switch is fully operational by pressing a button (the light on the front should light up green).
  • Make sure that the Hue dimmer switch is within range of the Hue light(s). About 12 meters.
  • Make sure that the Hue light you want to control is connected to electricity (try flipping your traditional wall switch).
  • Make sure the Hue dimmer switch is not mounted to a metal surface, this can negatively influence the range of the Hue dimmer switch.
  • Try restarting the Hue dimmer switch by holding all 4 buttons of the Hue dimmer switch up to # seconds. You can let go when the light on the front flashes red/green briefly.

Your Hue dimmer switch flashes a red light when you press a button.

This indicates that the Hue dimmer switch might have lost its configuration. Try (re)connecting it to your Hue bridge or (re)connecting it to your Hue lights directly if you don’t use a Hue bridge.
